Task
Your groups task is to create a newspaper. Each of you will be in charge of writing an article about an event that led to the Civil War. In addition, each member must also write an editorial and create an editorial cartoon showing different perspectives. After all articles are written, your group needs to form them into a newspaper.
The following are the sections that I am requiring to be in your newspaper. You may decide amongst yourselves which section each of you will cover.
Government/Political Correspondent-You report on acts of congress and new laws. You are the peoples eyes and ears in Washington. It is your job to make all of the complicated political stuff easy for common person to understand.
Society Page Contributor-You report on events that are happening on a more social level such as things people might do for entertainment. Who would ever think that a book could cause such a stir? And, yes, people actually did watch debates for fun.
Legal Reporter-You cover major court cases. The Supreme Court often sets legal precedents when they rule on a case.
Crime Reporter-You cover any criminal activity that is taking place. During tumultuous times some people turn to bad behavior to either make a point or because they believe their behavior is justified by their cause, but does that make it all right?
Editorial Page-Yes, facts are important, but now I want to know opinions. The editorial page is the spot where a person is allowed to tell their thoughts and beliefs, but your group has a twist. You are not going to give your own opinions. Instead you will write an editorial from either a Northern or Southern perspective, and then you will create an editorial cartoon from the other perspective.
